2. A Christmas Carol at Spencer Theatre (Dec 1 – 24)
Running for over 40 years, the live production of A Christmas Carol by The Rep has become a metro tradition. Featuring Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and other family favorites, A Christmas Carol is a timeless tale offering a great way for the KC community to get into the holiday spirit and rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.
This will be one of the most fun things to do in Kansas City to celebrate the holidays.

3. Monet & Friends Alive at Starlight Theater (Dec 1 – 31)
For the art fans in Kansas City, Starlight Theater (in partnership with The Nelson) presents Monet & Friends Alive. This fully immersive experience shows Monet’s art with vivid color, light, sound, and even fragrance!
You’ll be sure to wow your date with this unique KC event with student tickets starting at just $30. For those worried about below-freezing temperatures, a climate-controlled stage house has been put in place for viewing comfort.

4. The Plaza Lights (Nov 24, 2022 to Mid Jan 2023)
The Plaza Lights are iconic for anyone in Kansas City around the holidays, featuring over 200,000 bulbs strung across the Plaza. That’s 80 miles of lights if stretched from end to end! The Plaza has plenty of shopping and restaurants for the whole family or for a cozy night out with a significant other.
The Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022. Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick will flip the switch, followed by a fireworks display and live performances by Quixotic and KC-based Celtic-rock band, The Elders.
The November 24th schedule includes the following:
- 5 to 6 p.m.: Pre-lighting performances and giveaways from the main stage
- 6 to 7 p.m.: 93rd Annual Evergy Plaza Lighting Ceremony
- 6:52 p.m.: Ceremonial flip of the switch featuring Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick
- 7 to 8 p.m.: Post-ceremony concert with The Elders

5. Crown Center Ice Terrace (Dec 1 – Jan)
This will be the 50th annual opening for the Crown Center Ice Terrace! Admission is $8 per person, with $5 skate rental fees, and completely free for children under 4 years old. There are also group rates and private party options for anyone looking to go with a larger group or book a corporate holiday party.
To warm up after enjoying this outdoor ice rink, you can walk across the street to find the Mayor’s Christmas Tree, Lego Land, Sea Life, or visit Santa himself at the Crown Center Gingerbread Station through December 24th.

6. First Fridays at the Crossroads Art District (Dec 2)
Every first Friday of the month the KC Crossroads fills with galleries and exhibits of artists of all kinds! This experience offers an immersive view at the art of local, national and even international artists!
Enjoy local restaurants, breweries, food trucks and shops. This event is free to the community. Parking can be a challenge due to road closings for the event, so consider taking the complimentary KC Streetcar that runs through the area.

7. First Weekends in the West Bottoms (Dec 2-4)
December’s Warehouse Weekend theme is Bows in the Bottoms and is perfect for holiday decorations of all kinds.
The West Bottoms transform into a treasure-hunting paradise during the first weekend of each month. Antique and vintage stores open their doors for those in search of furniture, home decor, and the occasional have-to-have statement piece.
During the weekend of festivities, the eclectic nature of the West Bottoms is on display from street entertainers, escape rooms, food trucks, and more!

8. Weekend Fun at the Nelson Art Gallery – (Dec 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 31)
The Nelson Atkins Art Museum is offering a fun-filled activity this December as part of their free “Weekend Fun” series for families! The theme for winter 2022 is Greek vases with sessions offering the history on goddesses, warriors, and Greek life in general. If you’re up for it, you can even check out the free exhibition on Ancient Greek Vases afterward. Lessons run on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December.

9. Bar K’s Under the Bridge Live featuring Jackie Myers (Dec 3)
Looking for a pet-friendly event to take your four-legged best friend to? Look no further because Kansas City’s most popular dog bar has you covered! Enjoy drinks, let your dogs play, and listen to live music from Jackie Myers at Bar K’s Seresto Stage. No cost for people, but all pups are $10 to enter without a Bar K membership. As a note, Bar K does have entry requirements for dogs including updated vaccination status.

10. Musica Sacra performs Vivaldi (Dec 4)
Rockhurst’s Arrupe Hall is well known for hosting popular artists, poets, and musicians. This December, they will host Musica Sacra to perform works from one of the most renowned composers of the Italian baroque, Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria in D Major, RV 589,” Durante, “Magnificat in C Minor” and other traditional carols. This is rarely performed live, making it a truly unique Kansas City holiday experience!

11. The Nutcracker at Kauffman (Dec 7 – 24)
Similar to the Plaza Lights and A Christmas Carol, The Kansas City Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker is a KC metro holiday tradition. This annual showing continues to awe audience members of all ages with magical costumes, glimmering sets, and top-notch choreography. Take yourself back to childhood and dance with sugarplums this Christmas at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

12. Jurassic World Live Tour (Dec 9 – 11)
For younger kids, and the young at heart, T-Mobile Center offers the perfect winter entertainment for the whole family! The Jurassic World Live Tour has everything you would expect in terms of dinos and excitement, as well as a free pre-show adventure!
This is our favorite of the unique things to do in Kansas City in December. The thrilling experience of witnessing triceratops, stegosaurus, and the iconic Jurassic World vehicles has ticket prices starting as low as $17.

13. Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express (Dec 17)
With its high ceilings and world-class architecture, Union Station is a must-visit during holiday festivities. As most Kansas Citians know, every year Union Station offers a model train gallery that delights hobbyists and passersby.
This December the real deal will be visiting Haverty Family Yards at Union Station! Kansas City Southern’s six-car holiday train will feature intricate themed displays and will bring Santa Claus himself to Kansas City.
This event is on of the many free things to do in Kansas City this month. It’s open to the public which makes it a great experience for families and couples. For anyone looking for a little more, you can make a reservation to do a walk-thru tour.

14. Elf Film + Live Orchestra (Dec 21-24)
Why watch a movie at home when you could visit the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts and enjoy a heartwarming holiday film on the big screen? Buddy the Elf will make an appearance this year accompanied by a live Kansas City Symphony in concert performance of every score. T
he movie is family-friendly, with a PG rating, and features Will Ferrel as an elf named Buddy as he leaves the North Pole in search of his real father. To quote Buddy, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

15. The Bird Comedy Theater Holiday Spectacular (Dec 23rd)
Kansas City’s newest comedy club is bringing the laughs this December with The Bird’s Holiday Spectacular. This is an 18+ venue making it the perfect date night spot in KC this winter. The Holiday Spectacular will be a comedy variety show that’s sure to bring plenty of merriment and warmth. If you’re not able to make their Dec 23rd event you’re in luck since they’re offering several winter themed shows this December, including a free First Friday show!

16. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Dec 26)
The Ghost’s of Eve tour by the multi-platinum Trans-Siberian Orchestra is playing at the T-Mobile Center this December 26th. Touted as a ‘multi-generational holiday tradition,’ this must-see performance offers two showings. Kansas City is one of only 60 cities in North America that will get to experience the tour this holiday season and tickets start at just $39!

17. Kansas City NYE Live at the Power & Light District (Dec 31)
NYE Live is one of Kansas City’s biggest and most well known New Years Eve parties, with ticket options in silver, gold, and platinum packages to meet any budget. A champagne toast is included at midnight for all ticket packages!
The Power & Light district has the largest selection of downtown bars and nightclubs, so there is a spot for everyone at this 21 and over NYE event. This location is along the KC Streetcar route as well to allow for safe travel to and from Power & Light.

18. Zoo Year’s Eve at the KC Zoo (Dec 31)
If you’re looking for more family fun this New Year’s Eve, the Kansas City Zoo has you covered! Zoo Year’s Eve is the perfect event for taking the kiddos and runs from 8am to 10am on December 31st.
The zoo will offer family-friendly party games, dancing, and activities in addition to being able to see more than 1,700 animals and featured exhibits. For Jackson and Clay county residents, zoo admission starts at $8.75, and kids 2 and under always have free zoo entry.
