1. First Weekends at urban mining (March 31- April 3)

2. Concerts & Comedy at T-Mobile Center (Various Dates)

Whether you enjoy laughing out loud or jamming out to your favorite tunes, you’ll find something to fit your fancy this month at T-Mobile Center from grammy-nominated comedian Jim Gaffigan (April 1) to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Carlos Santanta (April 12) amd Megadeth and Lamb of God with special guests Trivium and In Flames (April 29).

3. First Fridays in the Crossroads (April 1) 

The first Friday of each month, art comes to life in Kansas City’s Crossroad Art District. During this free event, you can wander through art galleries, local boutiques, enjoy some of the best food trucks and check out Art Alley. 

With the warmer spring weather, April is the ideal time to marvel at local artists’ creations and snap a photo with the various mural walls. 

Each First Friday event is unique and worth experiencing for families and art lovers alike. 

First Fridays in the Crossroads is just steps from the streetcar which can add even more adventure to the experience.

4. First Weekends in the West Bottoms (April 1 – 3)

West Bottoms First Weekend in Kansas City

The West Bottoms transform into a treasure-hunting paradise during the first weekend of each month. Antique and vintage stores open their doors for those in search of furniture, home decor and the occasional have-to-have statement piece. 

April’s Warehouse Weekend theme is Bunnies in the Bottoms – just in time to scout out some unique spring pieces before Easter. 

During the weekend of festivities, the eclectic nature of the West Bottoms is on display from street entertainers, escape rooms, food trucks and more!

5. Petrouchka, Plus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto (April 1-3)

Have you ever wondered what the silver, seashell-looking building along the Kansas City skyline was? Wonder no more. It’s the home of the Kansas City Symphony. This April you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the acoustics with several unique performances from the Masterworks & Ovation Series. 

The Petrouchka and Mozart Clarinet Concerto is the first on the April calendar. This arrangement will get your heart pumping with its feature of the KC Symphony percussion section. You’ll also get to experience Mozart’s only concerto for the clarinet.

6. QUEER MOVIE NIGHT (April 4, 11, 18, 25)

Queer Movie Night is part of the Kansas City Center for Inclusion (KCCI). They host a movie night every Monday in April 6pm-8pm for all Queer people.

Each week a new LGBTQ+ centered movie will be featured.

This is one of the many free things to do in Kansas City this month.

7. Kansas City Royals Opening Day (April 7)

The Kansas City Royals open the 2022 season at Kauffman Stadium on April 7. The game starts at 3:10 p.m. Come cheer on Salvador Perez, Andrew Benintendi, and the rest of the hometown Royals as they take on Cleveland Guardians in the first game of the season.

8. Flyin’ West at the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre (Through April 10)

Immerse yourself in the arts with Flyin’ West, a play highlighting the lives of women in the 1800s as they set out west in search of freedom.  This inspiring performance takes place at the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, known as a fixture in the KC Arts scene for 17 years.

9. An Officer and a Gentleman (April 12 – 17)

The American Theater Guild takes the stage this month to bring KC audiences a play based on the Oscar-winning film, An Officer and a Gentleman. This love-story musical features an iconic score filled with hits and chart-toppers. 

Tickets can be a bit pricey ($73.50) but this production is well worth it.

10. Natalie Frank: Unbound Guided Gallery Meditation (April 14)

Art has endless interpretations depending on the eye of the beholder. This month you’ll get a chance for an in-depth reflection on Natalie Frank’s exhibition, Natalie Frank: Unbound, on display at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art through May 15th. 

One of the most unique things to do in Kansas City this April; you can view the artwork at your leisure during the entirety of its display or opt for an intimate viewing of her work with a guided gallery meditation. Entry to the museum and tickets for the meditation event are both free.

11. Spring Roundup (April 15 & 16)

Enjoy the fresh spring air and get your kiddos in the Easter spirit at Faulkner’s Ranch for the Spring Roundup. There will be storytime with the Easter Bunny (April 15) and an Easter Egg Hunt (April 16) in addition to all kinds of activities from wagon rides to stagecoach bounce. 

Tickets are $12 and the event is from 10am – 5pm both days.

12. Miraculous Mandarin with Rachmaninoff’s Fourth Piano Concerto (April 22-24)

The Rachmaninoff’s Fourth Piano Concerto is part of the Masterworks & Ovation Series by the Kansas City Symphony. This riveting performance reflects the mood in Europe after the devastating impacts of World War I with influences from Hungary all the way to Mexico.

13. Party for the Planet (April 23)

Earth Day 365

Join the animals and get wild for Mother Earth. Celebrate Earth Day with a Party for the Planet at the Kansas City Zoo. There is fun for the whole family from viewings of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax to creating seed balls to attract local pollinators. 

This is a free event that is included with your admission to the zoo.

14. Downtown Wine Walk (April 23)

Enjoy the fresh spring air in Downtown KC with the Downtown Wine Walk. This event, is one of our top things to do in Kansas City for couples in April. It features live music, wine tastings, and small plates from seven participating venues. Take your time exploring each stop and then head back to your favorite venue to enjoy a glass of vino.

15. Flights of Fancy Mega Kite Festival (April 24)

Did you know that April is Kite Month? Bring the whole family to celebrate with the annual Flights of Fancy Mega Kite festival.

If you are looking for fun things to do in Kansas City in April, this is our topic pick for family fun! The kites at this event are far from ordinary and include stunt, power, and mega kites. Plus, you won’t want to miss seeing the world’s largest windsock – it measures in at 3 stories high and 200 feet long! 

This is a free family-fun event with food and drink vendors on site.

16. Kansas City FilmFest International (April 25-28)

There’s nothing better than cozying up with a good movie on a rainy, April day. Support local filmmakers and plan to attend this year’s KC FilmFest International with a weekend full of good films. 

This is the 25th year this festival has delighted audiences in Kansas City. Check out the KC FilmFest website to review past entries and winners and get ready for this year’s festival. 

Movie line-up will be announced on March 10 and tickets go on sale March 16.

17. Brookside Art Annual (April 29 – May 1)

The Brookside Art Annual is celebrating its 36th year in 2022 and returns to its regular spring schedule.

With top artists from around the country, food and drinks, and kids activities, everyone is sure to have fun at the family-friendly Brookside Art Annual.

The annual show includes children’s activities on Saturday and Sunday, including face painting, arts and crafts, balloon animals and more.

2022 Art Annual Show Hours:

  • Sunday, May 1st, 11am – 5pm

18. Panic Film Fest (April 29 – May 8)

For lovers of sci-fi and horror films, the Panic Film Fest is for you! This is the 10th year the Screenland Theater and Downright Creepy have teamed up to bring one of the top genre film festivals to Kansas City. 

Each year the festival features approximately 60 feature films, shorts and live events in the historic Screenland Theater. All content is also available virtually this year as well.  A single ticket for one event runs $13 with packages available to access all the horror content.

19. Worlds of Fun Opening Day (April 30)

20. Animal Tales & Trails (All Month Long)

Let your children explore the many habitats of the animals they love in the free Animal Tales & Trails exhibit at Crown Center. Kiddos get to experience what it’s like to swing from a tree, climb into a nest, slide down an iceberg and so much more. 

Bonus: the fun doesn’t have to stop there, Crown Center is located near Legoland and SeaLife to make a day of adventure for your youngsters.
