2. First Fridays at the Crossroads Art District (August 5)
Every first Friday of every month the KC Crossroads fill with galleries and exhibits of artists of all kinds! This experience offers an immersive view at the art of local, national and even international artists! Enjoy local restaurant, breweries, food trucks and shops.
This is one of our favorite free things to do in Kansas City in August. Parking can be a challenge due to road closings for the event, so consider taking the complimentary KC Streetcar that runs through the area.

3. First Weekends in the West Bottoms (July 5-7)
The West Bottoms transform into a treasure-hunting paradise during the first weekend of each month. Antique and vintage stores open their doors for those in search of furniture, home decor and the occasional have-to-have statement piece.
July’s Warehouse Weekend theme is Barks in the Bottoms and is a great opportunity to scout out some fun summer finds.
During the weekend of festivities, the eclectic nature of the West Bottoms is on display from street entertainers, escape rooms, food trucks and more!

4. Professional Bull Riding (August 5-7)
August 5-7th PBR Outlaw Days will take place at the T-Mobile Center featuring professional bull riding and related events! Some of the best bull riders in the world will be attempting to conquer the rankest bulls of the PBR for another year. This is definitely one of the most unique things to do in Kansas City in August!

5. 4th Annual Kansas City People’s Choice Awards (August 7)
Terrell Ray presents with the 4th Annual Kansas City People’s Choice Awards at Arvest Bank Theatre on Sunday, August 7th. This prestigious event aims to honor and recognize Kansas City Influencers for their contributions to the community. Nominations for the recognition and awards are voted upon by the public in categories of all kinds. Red carpet and vending starts at 2pm, with the show beginning at 3:30pm. This is a formal event and dress code will be enforced.

6. Anastasia at Starlight Theater (August 9-14)
If you are a musical theater fan, one of the most fun things to do in Kansas City this month is to head to the Starlight Theatre to see one of the newest Broadway musicals, Anastasia. The play is inspired by the beloved 1997 Disney film of the same name. The show starts nightly at 8 pm.

7. SNL Character Mixology class (August 7, 21 and 28)
Do you enjoy cocktails? Do you watch Saturday Night Live? Based on the characters that bring you late-night laughter, Men That Mix is providing a mixology class teaching how to make delicious, bar-quality cocktails at home! This is our pick for one of the best things to do in Kansas City for couples in August.
The ticket includes four cocktails you will be taught to make during the class each a tribute to SNL cast members. Attendees are encouraged to dress with the theme. This event takes place on designated Sundays in August from 5-7pm. ($55)

8. Rupaul’s Drag Race (August 14)
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enjoy your favorite drag queens from the hit show, Rupaul’s Drag Race! As part of their Werq the World Tour, the drag queens will be putting on a show like no other at Uptown Theater on August 14th at 8pm. Select from an assortment of pottery and glaze colors to design your own masterpiece in a DIY workshop. Ticket price includes pottery, glaze and a beer.

9. Midwest Reggae Fest – Kansas City (August 19)
The largest reggae show in Kansas City takes place Friday, August 19th from 5:30-11pm at the Gem Theater. People of all ages can enjoy and appreciate roots and island reggae music as well as dancehall and afrobeat at the Midwest Reggae Fest! There will be multiple contests and giveaways throughout the night for patrons to enjoy.

10. Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival (August 19-21)
Held each year over the third weekend of August, the Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival celebrates the diversity of cultures found in the Kansas City community.
Different cultures and ethnicities are represented through food, dance, and music. Enjoy three days of amazing entertainment, delicious food, and great shopping! The festivities begin each night at 6 pm with the movie beginning at 9 pm. This free event offers a great way to get together and have a little fun as a community.

11. HistoriKC Fest Kansas City (August 19-21)
HistoriKC Fest offers an experience for history fanatics to enjoy wargames and other historical board games over a 3-day game convention! Some returning favorites from last year include Next War Con, ASL Summer Sizzler and Last Hundred Yards. Get ready to use your mind and strategy to win games against other attendees!

12. Happy Together Tour (August 21)
The Kauffman Center presents the Happy Together Tour on Sunday, August 21 at 7pm made possible by the John N and Marilyn P. McConnell Foundation. The tour features the greatest pop-rock hits from the 60s and 70s across the nation including music legends like the Turtles, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, the Vogues, and the Cowsills! Due to covid-19, masks are still required during the show.

13. Alicia Keys at Starlight Theater (August 24)
Well-known singer, Alicia Keys, is coming to Kansas City! At Starlight theater on August 24 (rescheduled from August 2021) the show starts at 8pm. Have fun listening to Alicia Key’s beautiful songs while you belt out the lyrics along with other audience members.

14. Jazzoo (August 26)
The annual fundraiser event, Jazzoo at the Zoo, will be taking place Friday, August 26th. This event takes place outdoors on the Zoo grounds. Upon entrance, attendees receive a map to all the food, drink and entertainment locations around the zoo grounds. Although black-tie attire is not necessary, formal wear is required. Proceeds raised go towards the zoo learning fund and helping buy food for the animals.

15. Kid LAROI (August 31)
As part of his End of the World Tour, Kid LAROI will be performing at Avrest Bank Theater on August 31 at 8 pm. Due to covid-19 guidelines, patrons will be required to show proof of a negative covid test or vaccine at the entrance. Doors open at 7. You won’t be able to stop dancing and singing along to these beats.
