Chiefs Lineup 2023

NFL teams tend to maintain some level of consistency from one season to the next, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of turnover as well. And with 53 active players on each team, there’s a lot of room for movement, whether it’s through trades, free agency signings, or the annual draft.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, the stakes are particularly high this off-season, as they’re coming off a Super Bowl victory and looking to stay on top of the league. With free agency wrapping up and the NFL draft in the books, it’s time to take a closer look at who will be on the Chiefs’ roster for the 2023 season.

Chiefs Starting Lineup & Full 2023 Roster

This overview of the Chiefs Lineup 2023 includes every player on the 53-man roster. I’m taking a closer look at what each player brings to the table and what fans can expect to see from them in the coming season.

Patrick Mahomes

  • Signed with Kansas City: July 20, 2017
  • Height: 6’2″ | Weight: 225 pounds
  • Hometown: Tyler, Texas
  • He is the first player in the 21st century to win both the league MVP and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season (2022).
  • Mahomes is the youngest player ever to win both a league MVP and a Super Bowl title.

Coming off of his second MVP season, Patrick Mahomes has had a remarkable career in the NFL so far. In his first full season as a starting quarterback in 2018, he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, becoming only the second player in NFL history to accomplish this feat.

He also led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game that season. He has led the Chiefs to 3 Super Bowls; winning 2 of them and named the Super Bowl MVP both times.

He has also been selected to the Pro Bowl multiple times and has set numerous NFL records along the way. Mahomes is widely regarded as one of the most talented quarterbacks of all time. At the age of 27, and his on-field accomplishments speak to his incredible skill and leadership.

Blaine Gabbert

  • Signed with Kansas City: 4/19/23
  • Height: 6′ 5″ | Weight: 235 lbs
  • Hometown: Ballwin, Mo.

Blaine Gabbert is the backup quarterback. He was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and has also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gabbert has had a somewhat inconsistent career, with some standout performances but also some struggles.

He has thrown for over 9,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his career, but has also thrown 47 interceptions. Despite his ups and downs, Gabbert is still a talented quarterback who has the potential to make an impact on any team he plays for. After Chad Henne’s retirement, Gabbert is a good veteran to have in the quarterback room as a backup.

Other notable players in quarterback position: Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun.

Running Back

Isiah Pacheco

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 5’10” | Weight: 216 lbs
  • Hometown: Vineland, N.J.
  • 2022 Mack Lee Hill Award winner.

Isiah Pacheco was a running back for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in college football. He had a successful college career, rushing 154 times with over 1,414 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.

Pacheco is known for his speed and agility, as well as his ability to break tackles and gain yards after contact. Drafted last year in the 7th round, he scored five rushing touchdowns and recorded the second-most amongst NFL rookies in 2022. He has already taken over the RB1 spot, and was possibly one of the biggest players to break out, seemingly out of nowhere as a rookie last year.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2020
  • Height: 5’7″ | Weight: 207 lbs
  • Hometown: Baton Rouge, La.

CEH was a first round pick for the chiefs in 2021, and unfortunately has not planned out the way they hoped he would. He is by no means a bad running back, but he has yet to reach the potential the Chiefs saw in him when they drafted him as a first round pick.

Many believe CEH will be traded this season with Pacheco stepping into the RB1 spot, but as of now, he is a great option as a workhorse, strong power back with speed and elusiveness.

Jerrick McKinnon

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2021
  • Height: 5’9″ | Weight: 209 lbs
  • Hometown: Marietta, Ga.

A phenomenal 3rd down back for the chiefs, McKinnon, while 31 which is very old for a running back, is still thriving as a pass catching running back that has made huge plays for the Chiefs in the last few seasons.

Other notable players at the position: La’Michael Perine, Deneric Prince.

Wide Receiver

Kadarius Toney

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’0″ | Weight: 193 lbs
  • Hometown: Mobile, Ala.

Traded at the trade deadline last season from the Giants, Toney has stepped into a lead role here on the Chiefs and made some huge plays, including one of the best punt returns ever, having the longest punt return in Super Bowl history against the Eagles in 2022 to secure the game. With Juju gone, many believe Toney will be stepping into the WR1 role, and I am excited to see what he does.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 206 lbs
  • Hometown: St. Petersburg, Fla.

MVS was a new signing in the 2022 off season, coming to the chiefs after being in the Packers for years. With an elite QB like Aaron Rogers, we already knew was MVS was capable of, but this past year he excelled even more with Mahomes throwing him the ball. Making multiple clutch catches deep downfield, as well and being able to stretch the field as a fast, tall receiver, he has cemented himself as a top deep threat option in Kansas City.

Skyy Moore

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 5’10” | Weight: 195 lbs
  • Hometown: New Kensington, Pa.

Drafted in the 2 second round of the 2022 draft, the Chiefs took Skyy Moore hoping he would be an elite playmaker. In his first year, he did not have a ton of production, mainly being used as a punt returner and 3rd option when running routes. However despite some rookie mistakes like fumbling the ball a few times, he did show some glimpses of fantastic playing skills, being able to create YAC time and time again.

Justyn Ross

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 210 lbs
  • Hometown: Phenix City, Ala.

Singed as an undrafted free agent in 2022, Ross is an amazing prospect that unfortunately had a major setback in a neck injury during his college football career.

As a result he did not play his first year as a Chief. Before the injury, many expected him to go in the first round of the draft, and now that he seems to be fully healed, having a surgery that corrected his neck, there is a lot of hype behind Ross to see if he can be the Chief’s next Tyreek Hill.

Rashee Rice

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 204 lbs
  • Hometown: North Richland Hills, Texas

Drafted out of SMU this year, Rice was the Chiefs second pick in the 2023 draft. Many were conflicted on this pick, as some analysts said it was too high for him, and others saying the Chiefs got a developmental player that has the makers of a star.

Other notable players at the position: Jerrion Ealy, Ty Fryfogle, Richie James, Cornell Powell, Nikki Remigio, John Ross, Tyrone Scott, Imhotep Smith-Marsette, Justin Watson

Tight End

Travis Kelce

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2013
  • Height: 6’5″ | Weight: 250 lbs
  • Hometown: Cleveland Heights, Ohio
  • Kelce has caught a pass in 143 consecutive games, longest streak in franchise history.
  • Kelce holds the record for most receptions by any NFL tight end in their first 10 seasons with 814 catches.
  •  Kelce is the fastest tight end in NFL history to record 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, 9,000 and 10,000 receiving yards.

The obvious TE1 for the Chiefs (and possibly the best TE ever), Travis Kelce is Mahomes #1 weapon. This has been the case ever since Mahomes started at QB for the Chiefs.

Racking up 1,000 yard seasons like it’s nothing, and showing no sign of slowing down, at the age of 33 Kelce is still Mahomes #1 weapon, and is just as loveable as ever.

Noah Gray

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’3″ | Weight: 240 lbs
  • Hometown: Leominster, Mass.

Drafted a few years back as a prodigy type to Kelce, Gray has been a strong TE2, being put in the game to block, and occasionally to catch a big catch, while the defense is focused on Kelce.

Other notable players at the position: Blake Bell, Jody Fortson, Kendall Blanton, Matt Bushman

Interior Offensive Line

Creed Humphrey

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2021
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 302 lbs
  • Hometown: Shawnee, Okla.

The starting Center for the Chiefs, Humphrey is only going into his third season, yet is already regarded as a top 2 center in the league. A steal in the second round of the 2022 draft, Humphrey continues to put up insane numbers, and protects Mahomes like no other center can.

Joe Thuney

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2021
  • Height: 6’5″ | Weight: 304 lbs
  • Hometown: Centerville, Ohio

Signed in 2021, former Patriots LG Joe Thuney is a multiple time all-pro guard. Thuney signed a 5 year, $80 million dollar deal with the Chiefs, giving us at the very least 3 more years with him protecting Mahomes.

Trey Smith

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2021
  • Height: 6’6″ | Weight: 321 lbs
  • Hometown: Jackson, Tenn.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, Smith has broken out from year one into one of the biggest draft steals of the past 10 years. At only 23 years old, going into his 3rd season, Smith is an elite run and pass protector, who uses his huge 6’5, 329 lb frame to protect Mahomes.

Other notable players at the position: Austin Reiter, Nick Allegretti, Mike Caliendo, Jerome Cavern

Offensive Tackle

Jawaan Taylor

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’5″ | Weight: 330 lbs
  • Hometown: Cocoa, Fla.

Singed this off-season from the Jaguars to a 4 year, $80 million dollar deal, Taylor is widely seen as a Orlando Brown Jr. replacement. With similar builds, some have speculated that Taylor will take the LT spot, despite playing the majority of his college and NFL career at RT. I believe that while the Chiefs may try to make him more versatile, he will stay at RT where he is most comfortable.

Wanya Morris

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’6″ | Weight: 307 lbs
  • Hometown: Grayson, Ga.

Drafted this year in the 3rd round, this Oklahoma tackle is an interesting prospect that the chiefs saw fly under the radar, so they decided to take a chance on him. At only 22, he is the current front runner for the LT spot, and will be playing alongside his college alumni Creed Humphrey.

Other notable players at the position: Chukwuebuka Godrick, Anderson Hardy, Datian Kinnard, Lucas Niang, Donovan Smith, Prince Tega Wanogho

Defensive End

George Karlaftis

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 263 lbs
  • Hometown: West Lafayette, Ind.

Drafted last year at the end of the first round, Karlaftis has made an immediate impact on the defensive line at LE. Showing flashes of a superstar, as well as using his large wingspan to deflect multiple passes, and racked up 6 sacks in his rookie year.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 255 lbs
  • Hometown: Kansas City, Mo.

The Chiefs first round pick this year, Anudike-Uzomah had a whopping 20.5 sacks and 8 forced fumbles in his 3 year college career at Kansas State. Growing up in Kansas City, being brought home to play for the Chiefs has been special for not just him and his family, but has already made him a fan favorite as the hometown kid.

Other notable players at the position: Mike Danna, Malik Herring, Truman Jones, Joshua Kaindoh, Charles Omenihu

Defensive Line

Chris Jones

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2016
  • Height: 6’6″ | Weight: 310 lbs
  • Hometown: Houston, Miss.

A bonafide all star, and multiple time pro-bowl DT, Jones has been the heart of the Chiefs defense ever since he was drafted in 2016. Putting up 15.5 sacks in the 2022 season Jones is at peak performance level. And at only 28, he seems to be planning on staying at the level for a long time.

Derrick Nnadi

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2018
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 317 lbs
  • Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.

The Chiefs nose tackle, Nnadi has had a big effect on interrupting the run game of opposing offenses by blowing up plays and pancaking offensive lineman. He is a great compliment to Chris Jones, as they play opposite roles in the position, giving the best of both worlds on the defensive line.

Other notable players at the position: Keondre Coburn, Byron Cowart, Phil Hoskins, Danny Shelton, Tershawn Wharton, Daniel Wise

Nick Bolton

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2021
  • Height: 5’11” | Weight: 237 lbs
  • Hometown: Frisco, Texas

Nick Bolton has been for the past two seasons, the core of the chiefs linebacker group. With a strong, physical build, as well as the ability to make plays that most linebackers couldn’t make, such a house, forcing a fumble, and then returning it for a touchdown in the Super Bowl, Bolton has the makings of a superstar, and this is the season everyone is hoping to see him break out.

Willie Gay

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2020
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 243 lbs
  • Hometown: Starkville, Miss.

For a while now, Gay has been one of the most overlooked players in the Chiefs’ linebacking corps. In his first few seasons, he struggled with making plays off the ball, which kept him from getting the attention he deserved. But this past season, he really started to find his footing and come into his own.

Gay has been outstanding in coverage, as well as in man-to-man situations. His ability to excel in both areas has been a huge asset for the Chiefs, and it’s been a great complement to the skills that Nick Bolton brings to the table.

It’s clear that Gay has worked hard to improve his game, and his efforts are paying off in a big way. If he can continue to build on the progress he’s made, there’s no doubt that Gay will be a force to be reckoned with for the Chiefs for years to come.

Drue Tranquil

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 6’2″ | Weight: 234 lbs
  • Hometown: Fort Wayne, Ind.

One of the newest members of the linebacker room for the Chiefs, Tranquil was signed this off-season from the Chargers, where he put up 5 sacks and an interception last year. He is a great depth piece we can expect to see make his way into the rotation through the coming season.

Leo Chenal

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’3″ | Weight: 250 lbs
  • Hometown: Grantsburg, Wis.

Leo Chenal was one of the most underrated players in the 2022 NFL draft. Despite being selected in the third round, he has yet to really break out as a star on the field. However, there are plenty of signs that he has what it takes to be a true standout in the NFL.

Coming out of college, Chenal was known as one of the hardest-hitting linebackers in recent memory. And while he hasn’t had a ton of playing time thus far, he’s shown flashes of the same raw talent that made him such an intriguing prospect in the first place. It’s easy to see why he was drafted as high as he was, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him emerge as a dominant force on the field in the coming years.

L’Jarius Sneed

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2020
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 192 lbs
  • Hometown: Minden, La.

Coming into the league in 2020, and drafted by the reigning Super Bowl champions is a hard thing to do, let alone do both at once. Sneed however, has taken that pressure and capitalized on it.

Drafted in the 4th round, hopes were high for Sneed, but not counted on, Being he was a later round pick. However, I’m just 3 seasons, Sneed has cemented himself as the Chiefs CB1 and has racked up 8 interceptions and a whopping 6.5 sacks as a cornerback in his first three NFL seasons.

At only 26 years old, he has not even hit his prime yet, and Chiefs fans everywhere are excited to see the day he does, hopefully it happens this season.

Trent McDuffie

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 5’11” | Weight: 193 lbs
  • Hometown: Westminster, Calif.

When the Chiefs traded up in the first round of the 2022 draft to draft McDuffie, expectations were high. Some loved the pick, some didn’t die to McDuffie’s smaller than average build for a corner.

Unfortunately McDuffie missed a couple of games his rookie season due to an injury he suffered in the season opener against the Cardinals. However, since his return, he has shown flashes of a rising star that will hopefully become a top corner in the league with proper development.

Jaylen Watson

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’2″ | Weight: 197 lbs
  • Hometown: Augusta, Ga.

Drafted in the 7th sound of the 2022 draft, Watson was not expected to pan out as a starter in the NFL. However with some key cornerbacks being injured at the start of the season, he stepped in and made some huge plays, including a 99 yard pick six against the chargers, and the in the playoffs he intercepted another ball thrown by Burrow in the 2nd quarter.

He has truly made the most of an opportunity, and has potential to be a great CB3 or CB4 in the Chiefs for years to come.

Joshua Williams

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’3″ | Weight: 193 lbs
  • Hometown: Fayetteville, N.C.

Another cornerback draft in 2022, Williams was drafted in the 4th round. Similar to Watson, Williams was asked to step up when key corners got injured at the beginning of the season.

While not making as many big plays as Watson, Williams held his own, and showed that he can be a reliable nickel corner that can even cover the spread.

Other notable players are the position: Dicaprio Bootle, Nic Jones, Martez Manuel, Reese Taylor, Anthony Witherstone

Justin Reid

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 207 lbs
  • Hometown: Prairieville, La.

Reid signed with the Chiefs in the 2022 offseason from the Texans, where he was drafted and played multiple years. He was an obvious replacement for Tyrann Mathieu, who signed with the Saints early that offseason.

While not as electric as Mathieu, Reid is the clear SAF1 in this defense and has cemented himself as a hard hitting machine that wide receivers and tight ends all over the league don’t want guarding them.

Bryan Cook

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2022
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 206 lbs
  • Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio

Drafted last year in the 2022 draft in the second round, Cook has not had a ton of playing time yet, but when in the field has shown he is great alongside Reid, as both are hard hitting safeties taht can blitz and cover.

Mike Edwards

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2023
  • Height: 5’10” | Weight: 205 lbs
  • Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio

Edwards was signed this off-season from the Buccaneers. Going into his 5th season, he has been a solid depth piece we will likely see worked into the defensive rotation this coming season.

Other notable players at the position: Deon Bush, Chamorro Conner, Anthony Cook, Kahlef Hailassie, Nazeeh Johnson, Isaiah Normon

Kansas City Chiefs Special Teams

Harrison Butker (Kicker)

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2017
  • Height: 6’4″ | Weight: 199 lbs
  • Hometown: Decatur, Ga.
  • He is only the fifth player in franchise history with 500 or more career points.

Butker started the 2022 season off with a ankle injury in week one that seemed to bother him for months. Even when he returned, he missed multiple kicks that would normally have been routine for him.

Despite this, the Chiefs did not lose faith in him, as they knew when healthy, Butker is a top 5 kicker in the NFL. They were proven right for sticking with him when he scored the game winning kick to win the Chiefs the Super Bowl this past season.

Hopefully with a full off-season of rehab and rest, he will be fully back to form by the start of the 2023 season.

Tommy Townsend (Punter)

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2020
  • Height: 6’1″ | Weight: 191 lbs
  • Hometown: Orlando, Fla.

Townsend has established himself as one of the top punters in the NFL over the past few seasons. In fact, he was recognized for his excellence with a selection to the 2022 Pro Bowl. He’s a key reason why the Chiefs are able to pin opposing offenses deep in their own territory, often forcing them to start just a few yards away from their own goal line.

During the 2022 season, Townsend racked up an impressive 2,672 yards on his punts, with only four touchbacks to his name. And his longest punt of the year was an absolute bomb that traveled an astounding 76 yards downfield. It’s clear that Townsend’s skill and precision are a major difference-maker for the Chiefs.

Perhaps the best part about Townsend’s game is that he’s still just 26 years old, with plenty of football left to play. That means the Chiefs can count on him to continue making a big impact for years to come.

James Winchester (Long Snapper)

  • Signed with Kansas City: 2015
  • Height: 6’3″ | Weight: 209 lbs
  • Hometown: Washington, Okla.

The position of king snapper might not get a lot of attention in football circles, but it’s an essential part of the game. A skilled long snapper can make all the difference when it comes to executing a successful punt, and at 33 years old, Winchester has been a reliable presence in that role for years.

His precision snaps have helped Townsend create optimal starting positions for the Chiefs’ defense time and time again. While some might overlook the importance of the king snapper, those in the know understand just how critical this role is to a team’s success. And with Winchester on their side, the Chiefs can rest easy knowing they have one of the best in the business.
