There’s no doubt that the Arcadia Valley is one of the best Missouri destinations for outdoor adventure. If you are planning a visit to Ironton, MO or the Arcadia Valley, I highly recommend Shepherd Mountain Inn & Suites.
My husband and I checked in as guests of Shepherd Mountain Inn & Suites in order to explore the mountain town of Ironton, Missouri and the nearby outdoor adventure offerings.
Shepherd Mountain Inn Review
The Shepherd Mountain Inn is a motel-style hotel and the type of place that caters to outdoor enthusiasts and family travelers.
Within walking distance, guests have access to several restaurants including the on-site Baylee Jo’s BBQ Seafood & Grill, a grocery store, hiking trails, and the Shepherd Mountain Bike Park.
The Arcadia Valley area is most famous for nearby Elephant Rocks State Park, Johnsons Shut-Ins, Taum Sauk Mountain (Missouri’s highest point) and its Civil War history, but there is a wide range of other things to explore and experience.
These are several reasons why I would recommend staying here if you have an upcoming trip to Ironton, MO, but let me dig in a bit deeper to give you a full review of Shepherd Mountain Inn & Suites.
Whether you are planning on vacationing in Missouri and looking for outdoor adventure or specifically looking for an Ironton, MO hotel, below is everything you need to know about Shepherd Mountain Inn.
Shepherd Mountain Inn & Suites Location
Shepherd Mountain Inn is located on Highway 21 in Ironton, Missouri, which is about 80 miles south of St. Louis.
Ironton is located in Arcadia Valley which also includes the towns of Arcadia and Pilot Knob. The Arcadia Valley is located in the St. Francois Mountains of the Ozark Plateau.
The hotel itself is close to everything we wanted to visit. As I mentioned above there are many places within walking distance and the other bigger attractions we wanted to visit were a short drive.
Jeremy and Jessica Horton, who recently bought the Inn, also own the on-site restaurant, Baylee Jo’s BBQ Seafood & Grill which is located in the same parking lot as the hotel.
Shepherd Mountain Inn Check In
Check-in was quick and simple. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. This was our first visit to Ironton and Arcadia Valley and they offered great advice about not only what to do, but tips on the best time to visit and how long to plan for each activity.
Shepherd Mountain Inn Hotel Rooms
There are 30 smoke-free guestrooms at the Shepherd Mountain Inn & Suites. The hotel offers free parking, free WiFi, and breakfast is included.
We stayed in a jacuzzi suite, that was spacious and very clean. It had a large front room with a couch, TV, kitchen table, desk, and full kitchen.
The bedroom and bathroom were separated by a door, which is great because my husband likes to stay up, while I am an earlier riser. This gave us space and we didn’t feel like we had to tiptoe around.
The bathroom in our suite had a separate sink area as well as a space with the tub, shower, and toilet.
Our jacuzzi suite came with bath salts for the tub.
Daily maid service is available.
Staying in a suite is a great way to save money on meals. Shepherd Mountain Inn offers family suites that sleep up to eight. They also offer jacuzzi suites with a full kitchen.
While the suites are updated and spacious, all rooms at Shepherd Mountain Inn have a microwave and refrigerator.
Some suites have a full kitchen including a full-size refrigerator, oven, coffee maker, and microwave.
Some suites offer a kitchenette with micro-fridge units and microwave.
All rooms have HD Flat Screen TVs.
Another great way to save money booking a suite is to bring your own snacks and reheat leftovers from your dinners out.
It’s also nice to be able to refrigerate your drinks for daily adventures, sightseeing or hikes.
Outdoor Space at the Hotel
Rooms with a view & more!
Each room at the hotel has a back door that leads to a large grassy area, picnic tables, places to grill, and a mountain stream that spans the back of the property.
Adirondack chairs are also available for each room on the backside of the hotel.
We visited in early spring, and I can imagine how beautiful this stream is in late spring through fall!
Breakfast is Included
A free hot continental breakfast is included with your stay at Shepherd Mountain Inn. A variety of offerings from pastries, cereal, waffles, fruit, oatmeal, and more is available along with options like biscuits and gravy, eggs and more.
This is yet, another great way to save a lot of money on a vacation, is by not having to buy breakfast.
Hot breakfast is served daily.

Baylee Jo’s is known for the best BBQ in the area. They make their own BBQ Sauces including a cherry sauce which is a local favorite. They are also known for their Catfish, crab legs dinner and specials throughout the week.
It’s the closest restaurant to the hotel, as it’s located in the same parking lot. So, the convenience factor is huge!
Good to Know
On our way to Ironton, we stopped in Sullivan, Missouri for a tour of Meramac Caverns. Missouri is the cave state, so if you have time during your Missouri vacation, this is a fun stop. Tours are about 1 hour and 20 minutes and include a portion of the 4.6-mile cavern system that was formed from the erosion of large limestone deposits over millions of years. The cave is said to have been used by Jesse James and his gang as a hideout.
We also stopped in the cute towns of Potosi and Caledonia and both are worthy of a stop for a walk around the historic main street.
During our stay in Ironton, MO we visited Elephant Rocks State Park, hiked at Johnson’s Shut In, visited the highest point in Missouri which is Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, drove through part of the Mark Twain National Forest, visited the Ulysses S. Grant statue, visited the Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site, explored downtown Ironton, and more!
So, be sure to plan a long enough stay because there is a lot to see and do in Arcadia Valley.
