The Cabin

Samba in the Meadow Loop
Entrance to our campsite

We stayed in Samba in the Meadow Loop. Each tiny cabin is in near-total privacy and seclusion from other campsites. Each of the cabins is spread 50 – 150 feet apart from one another, scattered amongst wooded areas spanning 198 acres.

Inside of the getaway cabin

Each cabin is named for a grandparent of someone on the Getaway staff. I love this idea!

They have AC and heat, no matter the season you will be quite comfortable in your temporary tiny home. You’ll also find lanterns, books, cards, and an activity booklet.

Each cabin is intentionally designed with thoughtful elements, like the signature picture window showcasing the gorgeous wooded scenery.

Ranging from 136-200 square feet, every space includes a queen size bed(s), a mini-kitchen, a bathroom, and a private outdoor area.

Getaway is more glamping than camping, but you get all the great parts of camping. Each tiny cabin has a picnic table, fire pit with a cooking grate, and Adirondack chairs.

The cabins are self-catering, allowing you to check yourself in and out via pin code, and they come with a good amount of essential necessities (like toilet paper, towels, and cooking supplies.

What Each Getaway Outpost Includes

The Kitchen

Getaway Kitchen

This was my second Getaway, so I knew what to expect, but you may surprised at what’s in the kitchen!

The kitchen has a stove and small refrigerator. There is no freezer, so the only thing we had a small issue with was ice. So, bring a small cooler that can keep ice for a period of time if this is important.

Yes, the water is drinkable (potable)! This is a huge convenience!

The kitchen is stocked with plates, bowls, cups, mugs, and silverware. Cooking items include a cutting board, wooden spoons, knives, tongs, pot, pan, and mixing bowl.

Additional kitchen items included a kettle, wine opener, bottle opener, can opener, scissors, lighters, paper towels, kitchen towels, and hand soap. As well as salt, pepper, and olive oil, coffee creamer and sugar.

Getaway fun stuff the leave you.

They also offer a s’mores starter kit and, activity guide, crayons and a fun book of sayings.

The Bathroom

The bathroom has toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. It also comes with toilet paper and bath towels.

bathroom shower

For a few dollars each you can buy coffee, tea, hot chocolate, insect wipes, log bundles, and fire starters.

The Outdoor Space

Todd at Fire pit at Samba cabin

We spent a good chunk of our time at the campsite sitting by the campfire.

We visiting in January and I’ll be honest, I was a little worried about the temperature. If it was going to be cold, I was hoping it might snow because I knew how beautiful it would be.

But, we got really lucky and had warm temperatures as far as January goes and were able to sit by the campfire each night. It turned out to be a cozy winter escape with real outdoor time!

There was a dog leash connected to the picnic table, which I thought was a nice touch. There was also a dog bowl provided.

Campsite S’Mores

Camping Tip: It’s always a good idea to bring a headlamp, glow in the dark camping compass and adventure first aid kit. But, most important — don’t forget the S’Mores Kit!

Hiking Trails

There are a few trails on the campground property that follow a winding stream for those who want a daytime activity.

What to Pack for Getaway

Food and Drink: Have a Meal Plan

Pack what you’ll need for at least dinners and possibly breakfasts. I prepped a few things for my trip and ended up keeping it pretty simple. I brought a roasted chicken, falafel, hummus for dinner, yogurt, granola and fruit for breakfast. We planned to stop for lunch on our way in on day one and we had lunch in the nearby town of Ste. Genevieve one of the other days.

Also, bring any drinks you enjoy and plenty of water (especially if you plan to hike).

Entertainment

Getaway books, radio and games

Each cabin comes with books, a radio, and card games, along with a map detailing nearby trails and activities like Sudoku, a word search, and suggested tasks to disconnect.

Activity Guide from Getaway

We loved having the playing cards and I even got in a few games of solitaire!

We also brought our travel chess boardMancala and Boggle.

Clothing

Bring layers and depending on what time of year you visit, extras like gloves and hats.

When we visited, it cooled down quite a bit once the sun set, so if you want to spend time outdoors into the evening or in early morning we found having an extra blanket to wrap yourself in was quite nice.

If you plan to hike, bring a good pair of walking shoes.

What to Do Near Getaway St. Francois

There are nearby hikes including the easy 1 mile Cedar Glade Trail. Other hikes are the Magnolia Hollow Trail, which is an easy 1.3 mile hike, and the Devil’s Honeycomb Trail is a moderate 1.6 mile hike that takes you to the highest point on Hughes Mountain.. All three hikes are dog friendly.

There are also a few fun adventures nearby like the Mine at Bonne Terre National Historic Site tour and the Critter Lane Petting Zoo.

If you are more into urban adventures there are several nearby wineries for wine tasting as well as the historic town of Ste. Genevieve. Founded in 1735, it is the oldest permanent European settlement in the State of Missouri and the historic downtown has plenty of restaurants, museums and shops.

Getting to St. Francois from St. Louis

Take 55 South to exit 162 for Missouri Hwy DD and turn right. Look for the Getaway sign near Jackson School Road. There are several gas stations as you exit I-55 if you want to pick up ice, wood, or other supplies.
